Shared Foundation: Engage

Wednesday, October 20  |  2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Engage Shared Foundation in the AASL Standards offers school librarians an opportunity to model and foster dispositions that allow learners to participate ethically and respectfully in communities of practice; produce materials based on valid information; act ethically and responsibility in their sharing of information; and extend learning by personalizing their use of information. In this hands-on workshop, school librarians will explore Engage’s competencies and alignments through investigating the interconnected nature of the Learner, School Librarian, and School Library frameworks. Attendees will participate in dynamic group discussions and leave with ideas to collaborate with fellow educators to make deeper connections to the school library and the community in and beyond the school.

Shared Foundation: Include

Thursday, October 21 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

The Include Shared Foundation is the heart of an effective school library practice–not as a buzzword or feel-good mantra, but as the muscle that builds an inclusive school space and community. School librarians should work to be bastions of equity, inclusion, and access in our schools, as we are uniquely situated to interact with every learner. Decisions school librarians make or do not make—by default—have tremendous impact on our learners, their families, our collaborators, and communities. The Include Guide is structured to serve as both inspiration and roadmap, and this pre-conference is similarly designed to foreground both learner-centered frameworks and usable ideas. Attendees will leave with resources, action steps, and a strengthened commitment to support our learners through the Include Shared Foundation.

Shared Foundation: Explore

Thursday, October 21 | 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

In school librarianship, there is nothing better than the opportunity to “Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection,” as embodied in the Explore Shared Foundation. In this preconference session, we will use the AASL Standards as our compass to navigate the broad and varied territory our profession covers, with a full backpack of resources, ideas, and trends to help us along the way. We’ll get moving with a strong set of boots: a practical model for real-world implementation of the standards. Through a journey of thoughtful, reflective practice to support the unique needs of their learners, participants will do their own exploring as they learn about Explore.
